The Native Americans used White Sage as a flavouring in their food and as a medicinal plant, they also used it to make "smudge sticks," a kind of incense. Sage leaves were bundled together, and then burned - the idea being that the resulting smoke drove away evil spirits and purified anyone who was present. Traditional Algonquian First Nations culture used smudge sticks when sending prayers to the Great Spirit.

Light the end of your smudging stick. Blow out quickly if it catches fire, then allow the tip to smoulder slowly, releasing thick smoke.

Direct smoke around your body & space with one hand while holding the bundle in the other.

Dispose of ashes outdoors by leaving them on the earth.

Include all small spaces that collect negative energy like corners, windows and behind doors. It’s also good to open cupboards and wardrobes because they can also hold stagnant energy.

During this smudging ritual you can say a mantra to yourself or aloud:
“I send all negative energies away to the light, and welcome positivity and love into my home."
